About the Exhibition

ÀBÀTÀBÚTÚ (The word in the Ondo dialect for prestigious, vintage cloth ), is a selling exhibition of the three major traditional, ceremonial hand loomed Yorùbá Aṣọ-Òke … Àlàári, Sányán and Etù in Agbádá, Ṣòkòtò, Ìró, Ipele and Gèlè. These textiles were spun locally from silk yarn produced by the anaphes moth and locally grown cotton.

Sìnmídélé Adésànyà takes us on a journey back in time to the highly organised Yoruba communities that existed in South West Nigeria centuries ago. Through the beautiful cloth, intricately woven in both vibrant and subdued colours, we explore the identity, history, culture, tradition and great style of the Yorùbá and the benefits of this knowledge for future generations.

We also learn why this vintage aṣọ-òke that has ceased to be produced remains desirable, valuable and relevant in contemporary times. ÀBÀTÀBÚTÚ affords us the opportunity to connect to our past and own a piece of our rich and beautiful history.
